great debatersEast Side Freedom Library and Saint Paul Federation of Teachers invite the university community to a free film screening and discussion of The Great Debaters on Tuesday, Dec. 9 at 6 p.m. at the East Side Freedom Library, 1105 Greenbrier Street, Saint Paul.

This critically acclaimed 2007 dramatic film, featuring Denzel Washington, explores the economic and racial challenges faced by African American students in the midst of the Great Depression. It tells the story of the debate team at an historically black college and their dedicated teacher/coach as they seek to develop and demonstrate their capacity to excel. The film is produced by Oprah Winfrey.

The library, which is owned by the city of Saint Paul, was leased this year to a labor historian and a theater professor, who are converting it into a center for social and immigrant history.
