Metropolitan State students seeking tutoring have an excellent resource—the Center for Academic Excellence (CAE). With locations at Saint Paul Campus, Midway Center and Minneapolis Campus, the CAE facilitates student success through one on one and small group tutorials in writing, math and science. There is also a testing center for students to take independent study exams and make up tests.
“Tutoring is for everyone,” says Julie “Jules” Thompson, CAE director. “We help students develop an academic ‘toolbox’ of skills.” According to Thompson, this is done through a holistic approach to tutoring which helps students meet goals by utilizing many different skills. A research paper, for example, may require information gathering skills, critical thinking and writing, and the CAE can assist students at each phase of the process.
For Thompson, the best part of the job is helping students become better writers. “Every field of study has writing conventions,” says Thompson. “I help students negotiate the complexities of the writing process.”
The center now offers tutoring session scheduling online, making it easier than ever for students to stay on top of their academics. To schedule a session, visit the online scheduling website.
