Letter from the President
Dear Colleagues and Students:
I am proud to recognize three Metropolitan State University staff who were nominated for the MnSCU Board of Trustees Professional Excellence in Service Award. This award is intended to recognize the key role that MSUAASF service faculty fulfill in providing outstanding service to our state universities and to the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities System. This is the second year for this award.
Nominees must have been employed for a minimum of five consecutive years at a MnSCU university. The two most recent years must be in the MSUAASF member’s current position. The remaining three years must be either a) in any position (excluding student employment) within the university in which the individual is currently employed, or b) in any MSUAASF position at any MnSCU university.
At Metropolitan State University, we received three nominations:
- Birtukan Abebe, Academic Advisor in the Information and Computer Sciences Department. Birtukan has served the Metropolitan State University community for more than 16 years. Her compassion and diligence in assisting students is seen on a daily basis. Her in-depth knowledge of the all things “Metro” contributes greatly in helping students, faculty and staff succeed. Departmental faculty rely on Birtukan’s expertise and are grateful for the way she generously shares her time and expertise.
- Eduardo Gutierrez, Admissions Counselor and Chicano/Latino Admissions Outreach staff. He has given over 30 years of service to Metropolitan State University as well as to the Latino/Chicano community of the Twin Cities metropolitan area. Eduardo is the face of Metropolitan State University to the Latino/Chicano community. His commitment in making higher education accessible to his community is not only his job, but it has been his mission.
- Phyllis Webster, Academic Advisor in the College of Management. Phyllis has been providing academic advice to Metropolitan State University students for more than 15 years. Phyllis is always among the first to volunteer her time and energy to assist students during orientation and registrations sessions. She assists with many university departments and clubs including the International Student Organization. She even rents out a room in her home to a Metropolitan State student on a regular basis.
The Metropolitan State Excellence in Service Committee had the difficult task of recommending one nominee to be forwarded to MnSCU for consideration as a representative of Metropolitan State University. After careful consideration of all three excellent candidates, the committee recommended and I endorsed the nomination of Eduardo Gutierrez. Eduardo will attend an Excellence in Service recognition program in April where the MnSCU Board of Trustees Professional Excellence in Service Award recipient will be named.
I want to thank and recognize Eduardo as well as Birtukan and Phyllis for the excellent service they provide and the acknowledgment of their peers who nominated them for this award. All three are role models for the excellent experience we strive to create for our students, faculty and staff.
