Global Poetry series continues at The Loft

The spoken word event is 8–9:30 p.m., Saturday, March 19 at The Loft at Open Book, 1011 Washington Avenue South, Minneapolis. Tickets are $5 at the door or free for Metropolitan State students and their guests. Catered refreshments will be served afterward.

Karla Cordero

Metropolitan State creative writing students and alumni read their work alongside national poet Karla Cordero, Loft Spoken Word Immersion Fellow and the cofounder and editor of SpitJournal, an online literary review for poetry and social justice. Her work has been in several literary publications and she is the 2013 San Diego Grand Slam Champion and recipient of the Global Diversity Award at San Diego State University. Cordero’s first chapbook, Grasshoppers Before Gods, was released this year from Dancing Girl Press.

Ant Black

Cordero and Metropolitan State spoken word artists are joined by Ant Black, a poet and one of the founders of Collective Purpose, which hosts one of the largest and longest running open mic events in San Diego. He’s a five-time member of the San Diego Poetry Slam Team and has collaborated with dance company bkSoul to stage shows exploring the fusion of text, movement and hip-hop.

Global Poetry is an annual event sponsored by Metropolitan State’s Communication, Writing and the Arts (CWA) Department in celebration of poetry that speaks to and of our world. This year the event is co-sponsored by Equilibrium, a spoken word poetry series sponsored by the Loft Literary Center. The series is hosted and organized by poet Ed Bok Lee, associate professor, CWA.
