Help the Lower Phalen Creek Project

Metropolitan State University’s Saint Paul Campus is located near many important urban natural areas that provide beauty, pleasure and recreation for the people on the East Side.

1460137388684The Lower Phalen Creek Project group seeks input from university students and employees who use or are interested in frequenting Swede Hollow Park, Bruce Vento Nature Sanctuary or other East Side or Lowertown natural spaces near the university’s campus on Dayton’s Bluff.

The survey results will be used to inform planning efforts to create greater connectivity and spaces that are natural, sustainable and accessible by multiple modes of transportation, in addition to protecting existing routes, parks and green spaces from being fragmented or excessive development.

The Lower Phalen Creek Project is a partnership of SaintPaul’s East Side and Lowertown neighborhoods, founded in 1997, with athree-part mission to redevelop the neighborhood’s assets, create green spaces and promote ecological health.

Specifically, the partnership seeks to:

  • Complete the redevelopment of the Bruce Vento Nature Sanctuary as an ecological, cultural and educational resource and vibrant community asset.
  • Create and promote use of new trail and green space connections that link Saint Paul’s East Side to Lowertown and the Mississippi River and fill key local gaps in the regional trail system.
  • Improve the water quality and ecological health of our communities through rain
    gardens and other sustainability initiatives.
