Faculty and staff are invited to the IFO Equity and Diversity Committee’s Spring Gathering and Seminar and part two of the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Spring Summit at 9 a.m., March 25, in the Science Education Center, Room 115, Saint Paul Campus. This event includes an interactive seminar on the impact of poverty on student learning experiences in higher education by Rashné Jehangir, PhD, Associate Professor, University of Minnesota.

In January 2014, the White House urged that college be made more accessible for low-income Americans. Yet, moving beyond access to success requires knowing more about the experiences of these students who have come to college despite the challenges of generational and situational poverty. Jehangir will draw on student voices from several qualitative studies to reflect on the diversity of first-generation students, the intersections of their multiple identities and their interactions with the institutional agents that affect college success.

Optional donations of nutritious, fresh and unopened food items for the Food for Thought Food Pantry are appreciated. Participating community faculty will earn 3 professional developmental activity hours. To register, contact Margaret Vaughan at margaret.vaughan@metrostate.edu.

Co-sponsored by Equity and Diversity IFO Committee, Office of Equal Employment and Diversity, the University Diversity Council, Ethnic and Religious Studies Department, and Center for Faculty Development.
