Eastbound Intersate 94 between Mounds Boulevard in Saint Paul and Highway 120/Century Avenue in Maplewood will be narrowed to two lanes of traffic from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m., Thursday, March 9. Then, eastbound I-94 in this same area will be narrowed to one lane of traffic from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. that same evening.
These closures are neededfor survey work in advance of this year’s construction project. Closure durations and time frames are all approximate and weather dependent.
Beginning 10 p.m. Friday, Sept. 16, southbound Highway 52/Lafayette Bridge will close between Interstate 94 and Plato Boulevard south of the river. The bridge, which crosses the Mississippi River east of downtown Saint Paul, will reopen by 5 a.m. Mon, Sept. 19, weather permitting.
There has been a change in the detour information for this weekend’s closure of the southbound Highway 52/Lafayette bridge in Saint Paul. With the closure of the 6th St. entrance into downtown St. Paul, westbound I-94 traffic should use Mounds Boulevard and Kellogg Boulevard to reach the downtown area. Westbound I-94 traffic can also use either I-494 or Highway 61 to reach Highway 52 from east of Saint Paul.
Also, bridge traffic will be restricted to carry out inspection activities. You should expect some delays early next week while workers cary out in-depth inspections of the bridge. Inspectors will work from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., Sept. 19 to Sept. 22. During the work, traffic will be restricted to a single lane between I-94 and Plato Boulevard.
This is the first major inspection of the bridge since it was built and opened to traffic late last year. Inspection activities will be cancelled in case of high winds or other inclement weather. It is recommended that drives use an alternate route or follow the detour signs to reach their destination.
The other detour routes remain the same:
- Eastbound I-94/southbound I-35 East: South on Highway 61, west on I-494 to Highway 52.
- 7th St: Mounds Blvd to eastbound I-94 and follow the eastbound I-94 detour.
- CHANGE: Westbound I-94: Mounds Boulevard to Kellogg Boulevard to downtown St. Paul. Use I-494 or Highway 61 to reach Highway 52.
The closure is necessary to apply a coating to the concrete driving surface of the bridge.
From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 23, the northbound Highway 52 ramp to eastbound Interstate 94 will be closed as construction crews install a camera pole.
Closure duration and time frame are approximate and weather dependent. During construction, expect delays and if possible, use another route to travel through the area. Know your route before you drive.

There are two new lane closures on I-94 at McKnight Road. Hudson Place between McKnight Road and Crestview Drive is closed for approximately two weeks. During this time, McKnight Road to eastbound I-94 will remain closed.
Beginning July 29, northbound McKnight Road just south of the I-94 overpass will be reduced to one late for approximately two weeks. The right lane will be closed starting at Burns Avenue for 500 feet.
Despite the closures, drivers will still have access to McKnight Road from eastbound I-94. For more information, visit the I-94 project website.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation announces there will be two new traffic patterns on eastbound Interstate 94.
Starting on Monday, June 20, crews will be closing the left lane of traffic on eastbound I-94 between St. Paul and Maplewood. This closure will be in effect between 4 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. daily. During this timeframe, there will be two lanes of traffic heading east towards Wisconsin.
Beginning at 9 p.m. Thursday, June 23, traffic on eastbound I-94 between 11th St. and Mounds Blvd will be shifted to the outside lanes. These traffic patterns will continue well into the summer. All work is weather dependent and subject to change.
Drivers should allow for more time to reach your destination. Consult the 511 mobile application for updates on all local construction before you drive. By planning ahead, you’ll keep yourself and others safe during construction. Know your route before you drive I-94.

Motorists should be aware of delays and lane closures on Interstate 94 in the East Metro as traffic changes occur May 26, weather permitting.
At 7 p.m. Thursday, crews will begin shifting the eastbound lanes of I-94 between Mounds Blvd and Century Ave. to the outside lanes. During the switch, eastbound I-94 traffic will be reduced to two lanes. The closures will end by 5 a.m. Friday, May 27.
In addition, at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 31, westbound I-94 will be shifted to the outside lanes and be reduced to two lanes. The closures will end by 5 a.m. Wednesday, June 1.
These shifts and lane closures are needed so crews can prepare the road for the next stage of construction.
The work is part of a larger two-year project which includes resurfacing both directions of I-94 from Mounds Blvd in St. Paul to just east of Century Ave. in Woodbury. Additional work includes constructing and replacing noise walls between Conway St. and Maple St. in St. Paul and extending auxiliary lanes in specific locations, bridge maintenance, construct trail connections, updating signals and pedestrian access and improving the drainage system.
The $49.8 million I-94 reconstruction and improvement project will provide a smoother, safer, long-lasting road with better pedestrian accessibility and improved drainage capabilities. Performing periodic pavement repairs at the appropriate times can greatly increase a road’s lifespan. The project helps ensure MnDOT’s transportation system will continue to serve the state for many years. Construction is expected to be complete by fall 2017.
